Position Responsibilities:  

  • Responsible for the protection of the facility’s assets, people and programs. 
  • Takes immediate corrective action on violations and/or deficiencies to minimize potential for harm.
  • Supports the hospital’s safety and security management program in an attempt to provide a safe and secure physical environment
  • Treats all hospital patients, visitors and employees with dignity and respect while acknowledging their needs in a timely manner
  • The Armed Police Officer (APO) conduct demonstrates compliance with and reporting of suspected violations of relevant laws and regulations, the facility’s compliance policies and procedures and HCA’s Code of Conduct.

Department Specific Criteria:

  • Provides preventative patrols in and around the Emergency department
  • Wanding Behavioral Health patients prior to bedding in the presence of clinical staff.
  • Wanding all patients, in the presence of clinical staff, associated with any violent crime or domestic violence situations, including trauma patients.
  • Wanding all visitors entering the facility to visit any involuntary hold patients (1013) on inpatient units and securing the visitors’ belongings in locker while they visit the involuntary hold patient (1013).
  • Assists hospital staff with the enforcement of Temporary Detention Orders (TDOs), Emergency Custody Orders (ECOs) and other tasks, as necessary
  • Responds to various emergency codes to provide security services.
  • Prepares written reports, including daily activity reports, incident reports and other reports, as assigned.
  • Reports unusual incidents and crimes which occur during assigned shift using appropriate forms before end of shift. 
  • Relay orders pertaining to post and other necessary information at change of shift.
  • Only specific department approved firearms, batons and pepper foam may be carried as duty weapons on HCA property by Officers certified to carry the specific weapon.  


  • Police Academy graduate required
  • Must be an employed, sworn and commissioned Police Officer with a local Law Enforcement agency
  • Documentation of ongoing law enforcement training as regulated by the Law Enforcement agency
  • Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Computer skills to operate electronic security equipment
  • Calm and mature demeanor

           10.   Demonstrates good judgment in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.

           11.   Follows through with assignments and informs supervisor if unable to complete tasks.

           2.     Consults or reviews written protocols to clarify uncertain aspects.

           3.     Completes annual mandatory In-Service requirements.

           4.     Attends department meetings (reviews and signs minutes when unable to attend) and In-Service training programs to remain current.                              

           5.     Assumes responsibility for continued professional development. 


           1.     Accepts and supports changes in hospital and departmental policy.

           2.     Competent as appropriate in prevention, contamination and transfer related to Infection Control and

                   Safety policies.

           3.     Competent in the effective and safe use of required equipment.

           4.     Observes hospital mission statement, philosophy, goals and objectives including meeting Code of

                   Conduct and Service Excellence requirements.

           5.     Performs other duties as assigned.
