Manager, Research Finance

JOB PURPOSE:

Provide oversight and fiscal/accounting management for Piedmont Healthcare Research programs. Responsible for completing all research financial tasks and managing all research financial staff and providing results. Responsible for leading the financial integration of all research including overseeing and managing clinical research finance pre- and post-award activity. Works with physician and business management leaders to ensure that financial and operational results are optimized.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Partners with appropriate stakeholders across the institution on research goals, strategic initiatives, and research growth.

2. Oversees business processes in partnership with appropriate staff on research accounting, research financial systems, research Internal budgeting and reporting, clinical research reporting, contracts coordination, and financial reporting

3. Prepares the annual entity budget, reviews, and monitors monthly income statements to ensure accuracy, reports financial results to business management leaders, and works with business management leaders to resolve negative variances. Provides technical, and decision-making support to management regarding financial and operational improvement.

4. Develops value assessments for new technologies (devices and drugs) and procedures to measure the economic impact.

5. Prepares clinical trial budgets from complex scientific protocols for all PHC research studies, presents expected contribution margin and breakeven point to physician leaders, and negotiates budgets with industry sponsors and other funders to ensure the financial optimization of the research department. Monitors individual performance relative to pre-study estimates and renegotiates study budgets as necessary.

6. Manages all post-award functions for the clinical research program, including management of the clinical trial management software system, daily processing of revenue activities in compliance with study budgets, invoicing, and cash processing and collection activities.

7. Coordinates the research programs interface with Supply Chain and Revenue Cycle and Billing to ensure the proper billing of research claims to research sponsors and third-party payers. Works with the Epic IT, Hospital Billing and Physician Billing teams to ensure the appropriate identification and processing of research related charges.

8. Participates as a member of the Piedmont Research Institute Steering Committee to present the financial direction of the program. Serves as a member of the Cardiovascular Scientific Review Committee as studies are selected.

9. Educates all parties (physicians, clinical research operations, and business management leaders) regarding profitability and internal costs of their departments and initiatives for both employed and non-employed researchers. Provides financial improvement opportunities as needed for all research studies.

10. Hires, manages and trains employees.

11. Manages the research financial organizational structure, business processes, update and draft policies and determine training and education needs for research financial staff. Integrates acquired research programs into Piedmont platform.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, with ability to actively and professionally interact with all levels within the organization.

Able to work independently within a fast-paced environment requiring continual improvement, create integration of research teams supporting many areas of finance across the organization and successfully lead research financial strategic initiatives and projects

Outstanding people management and development skills as well as superior communication and analytical skills.

Technical competence in healthcare financial management, with experience in regulatory compliance, budgeting, and patient account and research sponsor billing.

Thorough knowledge of generally accepted principles and financial and internal control systems.

Must be able to develop strong collaborative relationships with senior level executives, including physicians.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Bachelors degree in Business Administration/Finance/Health Care Administration/Accounting.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Five (5) years of responsible professional work experience in health care management, health services planning, project management, decision support, or a closely related field is required, to include at least two (2) years of research finance experience.

MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:

None.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters degree is preferred.

Ability to provide subject matter expertise in research financials & budgeting, contracts management, clinical research pre- and post-award management.
